Mario Bros T-Shirt
Kids, young and old, love Mario Bros who has been entertainer computer gamer since the 80s. Now children and adults can wear a Mario Bros T-Shirt like that in the photo to the left. Before we show you the buy now link here is a little bit of history about him. The original Mario Bros game evolved in the late 1970s and came to British children in the 1980s in a home entertainment system called the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and was on the Christmas wish list from Santa from most children. Other computer games consoles on the market at the time were the Intellivision and the Atari. It started as a toy company but saw the advantages and increased profit opportunity of starting their own home computer games system.
We are glad they did because if they had not branched out we would be without the cheeky wee chap.
The first console was called the Famicom and was released in 1983 throughout Japan. It included games, which are still as popular today in new forms, such as Popeye, Donkey Kong Junior and Donkey Kong. Soon they introduced new gadgets to the Famicom to improve game play and this included a karaoke system, a cassette drive (no CD Rom or even CDs in those early days of home computing), keyboard and even 3D glasses. Improvements were made to the original Famicom family computer system and early models were recalled to the factory because of teething problems and technical errors. Undeterred they set about improving their product and by Xmas 1984 they sold over 2.5 million Famicom consoles.
They studied the market trends and whilst most people thought home computer gaming system consoles were a passing fad they wanted to go international. Ignoring the sceptics they tried to partner with Atari. Negotiations failed but they launched new and successful products such as the Game and Watch. This was followed by the Nintendo NAVS and then their plastic robot called Robotic Operating Buddy (ROB) which connected to the games console and would move in sequence with the on screen game. Marketing and distribution was handled by a company called Worlds of Wonder.
The Nintendo system was first introduced to the United States in 1985 and two years later to the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy and mainland Europe. It was called the Sega Master System. Shoppingcoupons owned one which they one in a Wotsits crisps competition and it came with a free Mario Bros game.
Given today's wide range of computer games readers may be surprised to learn that the SMS launched with a range of only twenty games. At the time this was considered a
huge range! With the popularity he became the lucky mascot for them and soon easily recognisable. Today the image can be seen far and wide. Though modern day game console users may laugh at the inferior graphics and slowness of the Sega Master System it was considered the most superior gaming console of its
day. Many retro games still play and this includes taking him or Sonic the Hedgehog for a spin across the screen for old times sake - wearing a Mario Bros T-Shirt of course!
They developed their gaming systems a bit more and this included a function that heartened many a teenager - the ability to save computer games being played with a
built in neo lithium battery. Soon after they released Super Mario Bros 2 and then 3 and other new games such as The Legend of Zelda.
Very few Christmas' go past without games or a Nintendo gaming system being on the top of a Christmas list to Santa from most children.
Walt Disney soon allowed them to make games from some of their most favourite characters and films such as Mickey Mouse, Chio and Dale's Rescue Rangers and Duck Tales. Other TV and film releases followed and these included Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and the dinosaur favourite Jurassic Park. There was even a game where players could take a virtual walk through Disneyland and visit the theme park attractions. A joy for most kids and a very popular game.
Sega and Nintendo dominated the gaming industry and both brought out hand held gaming systems. These were the Game Boy by Nintendo and the Sega Game Gear. Popular games for the Game Boy were Tetris, WarioLand and of course Super Mario World which led to three volumes. In 1998 the Game Boy Colour was released and several years later a Game Boy Advance was released which had a back light to improve screen quality and a rechargeable adapter.
Later gaming systems included the Super Nintendo (SNES) and then the Sega Mega Drive and the Dreamcast before Sega sold its rights. New releases of Sonic the Hedgehog can now be found on the GBA and the Game Cube.
Though nowadays youngsters and even adults would not be without their Playstation 3, Xbox or Wii but some still look fondly back at the early days. Lovers of nostalgia
will equally love one and it makes a great present for that special occasion like a birthday or anniversary.
Game Tart offer a free trial of renting computer games by post.
